The day a new dog comes home tends to stay with you for years, from the slightly chaotic ride back to the moment they finally flop down with a sigh and fall asleep near your feet. Those first few weeks shape how safe your dog feels with you, and a bit of planning makes the whole hello calmer for everyone in the house.

This guide works for a wriggly puppy and for a grown indie who has already seen a fair bit of street life, and it covers the setup, the settling in and the health basics that matter most for dogs in India. Give Your Dog a Sanctuary Space

A whole flat full of new smells, new people and new noises can feel enormous to a dog who arrived an hour ago, so starting small helps a lot.

Toronto Humane Society recommends giving a newly adopted dog a private sanctuary space such as a crate, a pen or a closed-off area where they can rest and take in all the changes, since a dog given the run of the home straight away can easily get overwhelmed.^[8] Put a soft bed, a water bowl and a chew toy in there, and pick a corner away from the main door and the busiest part of the house.

Before pickup day, walk around at dog height and tuck away charger wires, slippers and anything small enough to swallow. Check the balcony grills and the main door too, because a nervous dog who slips out in an unfamiliar neighbourhood can be very hard to find again.

Keep the First Week Quiet

The urge to show off your new family member to the whole society, the building watchman and every cousin on the family WhatsApp group is completely understandable. Shelter trainers call these early weeks a decompression period and suggest keeping life as low key as possible, so your dog can rest and reset after yet another big change.^[8]

In practice that means short calm walks, meals at the same times every day and plenty of undisturbed naps in the sanctuary space. An indie who grew up on the street might barely notice honking traffic and still jump at a pressure cooker whistle or the lift door, so watch what unsettles your dog and give those moments extra patience.

You may see a few surprising behaviours in the first weeks as well, which is normal for a dog who is stressed and still learning how a new home works.^[8] When your dog does something you love, like settling on the bed or trotting over when called, reward it right away with a treat or a warm word.^[8]

Book the First Vet Visit in Week One

A vet visit in the first few days gives you a health baseline and a clear plan, and it helps you catch anything the shelter or rescuer may have missed.

Core vaccines. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) lists vaccines against distemper, adenovirus and parvovirus as core for every dog in the world.^[1] It also treats rabies as a core vaccine wherever the disease is endemic, even in places where the law does not require it.^[1]

Rabies in India. WHO describes India as endemic for rabies and estimates the country accounts for about 36 percent of the world's rabies deaths, with somewhere around 18,000 to 20,000 deaths a year.^[2] Dogs are the source of up to 99 percent of human rabies infections, and WHO calls vaccinating dogs the most cost-effective way to protect people,^[2] so your dog's rabies shot quietly looks after your family and your neighbours too.

Leptospirosis. WSAVA also suggests treating the leptospirosis vaccine as core in places where the disease is common and good vaccines are available.^[1] Researchers in Chennai point out that India's warm and wet monsoon creates ideal conditions for the bacteria, and their recent study found antibodies in 47 percent of 100 dogs that vets suspected had the infection.^[5] The course is two doses 2 to 4 weeks apart, usually starting from 8 weeks, followed by a booster every year.^[1] Ask your vet whether this vaccine makes sense for your dog, especially if your area tends to flood during the rains.

The puppy schedule. Puppies usually get several doses of core vaccines two to four weeks apart, with the final dose at 16 weeks of age or later and a booster at or after 26 weeks.^[1] Rabies follows local rules and the vaccine's leaflet, and a common pattern is a first dose at 12 weeks with a second a year later.^[1] If your adult rescue came without any papers, ask your vet to build a vaccine plan with you from the beginning.

Deworming. Puppies pick up worms very easily, and Cornell University's shelter medicine team advises deworming them every two weeks until at least 12 to 16 weeks of age.^[6] Your vet will suggest a schedule for an older dog after the first check.

Ticks. A survey of 525 dogs across four Indian cities found that close to half carried at least one tick-borne infection, and ticks were found on just over half of the dogs examined.^[4] Ask about tick prevention at this first visit, particularly if your dog will share walking routes with community dogs.

Carry whatever papers came from the shelter, foster or rescuer, even the messy handwritten ones, because every old date helps your vet fill in the gaps.

Make Your Kitchen Dog Safe

Indian kitchens smell wonderful to dogs, and a few of the ingredients that make our food so good can make them quite unwell.

The ASPCA's poison control experts explain that onion, garlic and chives can irritate the gut and damage red blood cells, which can lead to anaemia.^[7] They also link grapes and raisins to kidney damage in dogs and flag alcohol and raw yeast dough as dangerous.^[7] That leftover dal tadka, the onion pakoda plate and the kishmish in the kheer are best kept well out of reach, however hard those eyes stare at you from under the dining table.

If your dog does get into something risky, note roughly how much they ate and call your vet straight away.^[7] Keeping your vet's number saved on every phone in the house makes that call much quicker on a stressful day.

Help Your Puppy Meet the World

The first three to four months are a sensitive window when puppies learn what the world looks and sounds like, and the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) encourages owners to start socialising puppies before the full vaccine series is complete.^[3] Their guidance says puppy classes can begin as early as seven to eight weeks, once the puppy has had at least one set of vaccines a week earlier along with a first deworming, and as long as the puppy stays healthy and up to date on shots.^[3] The same group points out that behaviour problems cause more deaths in dogs under three years old than infectious disease does.^[3]

In India, that usually means choosing clean and controlled settings like a vet-run puppy class or a vaccinated friend's dog at home, and waiting for your vet's go-ahead before busy streets and parks. Gentle new experiences at home count as well, like the whirr of the mixer, the doorbell, a ride in the lift and people wearing helmets or flowing dupattas.

Adult rescues keep learning too, so keep their new experiences short and pleasant and let your dog set the pace.
